The named programs, and when they actually close

Windows below are typical and move every year. Confirm each one on the program's own site before planning around it.

• RSI (MIT) — applications close around January. Roughly eighty students worldwide, free. Treat it as a lottery ticket, not a plan.
• COSMOS (UC) — closes early February. Four weeks residential at a UC campus, clusters from marine biology to robotics, California residents. The most accessible of the prestigious science programs, and still competitive.
• SSP (Summer Science Program) — closes February. Thirty-nine days of genuine research in teams of three: asteroid orbit determination, genomics, or biochemistry. Rising seniors. One of the oldest and best-regarded programs in the country.
• Stanford SIMR — closes late February. Eight weeks in a Stanford medical research lab with a stipend. Extremely competitive, and being local cuts both ways: the applicant pool is your neighbours.
• Ross / PROMYS / Canada-USA Mathcamp — March-ish. Proof-based mathematics. The applications are problem sets rather than essays and take weeks to do properly, so start in January.
• Boys State / Girls State — nominated through school in late winter. A week of simulated state government. Cheap, well-regarded, consistently overlooked.
• Bank of America Student Leaders — closes January. Paid eight-week nonprofit internship plus a week in Washington. Paid work experience that doubles as a service line.

The two options that beat most of them

Cold-emailing labs

Stanford, UCSF, Berkeley, San José State, and every biotech on the 101 corridor. The rule of thumb is that ten emails produce one reply and forty produce a placement. It costs nothing, it is available to everyone, and the work is usually better than a curriculum because it is real.

What works: a short email to a specific postdoc or graduate student — not the PI — naming a specific paper of theirs and one specific question about it, saying exactly how many hours a week you can commit and for how many weeks, and attaching nothing. Follow up once, after ten days.

City and county internships

San José, Santa Clara County, Sunnyvale, Fremont, Palo Alto and most Peninsula cities run paid youth programs — public works, parks, libraries, public health, planning. They are dramatically less competitive than anything with a brand name, they pay, and they generate the kind of specific material that makes an essay.

Programs you pay to attend

Fee-paying "pre-college" summer programs at brand-name universities are a large industry. Admissions readers know exactly which ones admit anyone who pays, and a purchased summer is neutral at best. There is nothing wrong with attending one for the experience — students often love them — but it should be understood as an educational holiday, not a credential.

A job counts

Forty hours a week at a restaurant, tracked honestly, reads better than a two-week enrichment camp the family paid for. This is genuinely true and families in high-income areas consistently disbelieve it.

The rule

One thing, four weeks or more, that produces something at the end. Four separate one-week camps is a summer of shopping. Depth is measured in continuous blocks.

The winter conversation

Some time in December or early January, sit down and answer three questions: what is the direction, what is the next rung in it, and which of the February deadlines serves that. Then put the deadlines on a shared calendar. That single hour is worth more than any individual program on this page.
