A quiet, Bible-rooted ritual for the morning. On a fast it is the thing that gets done instead of breakfast.
Hungry, and not turning back.
From the middle of a fast with Jesus. Then, further down, a separate note for the guys in a dry spell.
I want to write this down while it is true and not after, when it will be easy to make it sound cleaner than it was. The hunger is severe. Not the polite kind you can drink a glass of water past. The kind that sits in the middle of you and asks, every few minutes, whether you meant it.
I meant it.
The hunger.
It comes in waves, and the waves have opinions. Around the second hour after I would normally eat, it argues. It says a small thing would not count. It says nobody would know. It says the body is the temple and the temple needs bread. It is very good at scripture when it wants a sandwich.
Then the wave passes, and what is left is quieter than anything I have had in months. The noise about food, which I did not know was noise until it stopped, stops. The list of small wants goes silent. What remains is one want, and it is not for food.
I am not fasting to lose weight, though I will. I am not fasting to prove anything to anyone reading this. I am fasting because He asked, and because every time I have said yes to something hard He asked for, the far side of it was better than the side I was standing on.
The hunger is the price. It is not the point. The point is Who is on the other side of it.
Three things He gives back.
- A cleaner spiritThe things I reach for when I am bored or low, food first among them, are a way of not listening. Take the reach away and you are left listening. It is uncomfortable for about a day. Then it is the best company you have ever kept.
- A sharpened soulEverything is louder when you are hungry, and then, past a certain point, everything is clearer. Decisions I had been circling for weeks got made in an afternoon. Not because I was smarter. Because there was less in the way.
- A better bodyLast on purpose. It comes, and I will take it gladly, but if it were the reason I would have quit on day one. A body that has learned to go without is a body that is finally yours to direct.
Plainly. Water, salt and sleep are not cheating; they are how a long fast is done without hurting yourself. If you feel faint, your heart races, or you are on medication or have a condition, that is a conversation with a doctor before it is a conversation with a website. He does not need you to be reckless to be faithful.
How to break a dry spell.
This one is practical and it is short, because the guys it is for will try to make it long. Three moves and one optional.
- 1. Fix the photo, tonightTake a clear photo of your face in daylight, no hat, no sunglasses. Hand it to an AI image tool and describe the photo you actually want: the light, the place, the shirt, the version of the haircut you are getting next week. Keep it your face; she has to recognise you at the door, and the whole thing dies if she does not. Put the best one first on Tinder, Hinge, whichever you use. Most guys lose before the first message because the first photo lost. Do not be most guys.
- 2. Do not use logic. Especially you.If you are the scientific type, the smart one, the one who wins arguments, hear this clearly: there is no logic in dating. None. You cannot reason a woman into a feeling and every attempt reads as exactly what it is. Do not explain yourself. Do not debate. Do not build a case. Focus solely on the feeling: hers, and yours. Notice what makes her light up and go there. Say the thing that makes you feel something and let it show. Your job is not to be right. Your job is to be felt.
- 3. Hold the end in mind and ride the vibesKnow where the evening is going, quietly, and then stop steering. The end in mind is a direction, not a script. The rest is reading the room, matching her energy, letting a silence sit, laughing first. The moment you start thinking about the next move you have left the room, and she can tell. Stay in it.
- Optional, and I mean it: trust Jesus when it goes wrongIt will go wrong sometimes. She goes quiet, the date is flat, the match unmatches. Bring it to Him. In my experience He answers one of two ways: peace inside the uncertainty, or a door you had not noticed that opens onto something more plentiful than the one that shut. Follow the sound of His voice and He will raise you higher than you thought you were allowed. Ignore it long enough and He will let you walk somewhere far worse than the place you are afraid of. I have stood in both. I am not guessing.
A better photo, no logic, the end in mind, and ride the vibes. That is the whole thing.
Tools for this
Small apps built for small steps. Each keeps your data on your phone.
Before the photo goes up, a second opinion on the fit. It is honest, which is the point.
Skin, sleep, training and the rest, tracked as a plan. The better body, in a form you can follow.
Matthew 4:4 — “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
Isaiah 58:8 — “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily.”
John 10:27 — “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
