The stones
Deuteronomy 27

Great stones, plaistered, written on very plainly.

When Israel came over Jordan they were told to do a strange, physical thing before anything else: “Thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaister them with plaister: And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law very plainly.” Not a scroll, not a sermon. Stones, whitewashed, standing in the open where everybody walking past has to read them. Joshua did it again at Ebal, and twelve more were carried up out of the riverbed at Gilgal so that when a child asked what they meant, there was something to point at.

So here are ours. Coated white, set upright, written plainly, meant to be read on the way past rather than studied.

More stones as they are given. If one of these is the one you needed today, it is yours; take it off the wall and carry it out.
